AMRC's statement on NIHR annual statistics

Published: 9 August 2017

Last year the Association of Medical Research Charities called for the NHS to ensure that all patients can take part in appropriate research wherever they live in the UK. On 2 August 2017 NIHR published annual statistics showing that more people than ever are now participating in research.

Aisling Burnand MBE CEO of the AMRC said:

“At a time of uncertainty, it is promising to see such a growth in patient participation in clinical research studies. Our members tell us patients want the opportunity to take part. It offers hope and the possibility of improving care and treatment options. We see today’s figures as a sign of the health and strength of the UK research sector. But we are not complacent. Our own figures show that research charities fund a huge 29% of publicly funded research in the NHS – a figure we are very proud of giving us a major role in the medical research pipeline. We want to build on this and give more people the option to participate in research when they want to. The publication of the UK’s first life sciences industrial strategy and accompanying sector deal are eagerly anticipated and will give a further timely opportunity to build on this growth and success.”
